Assalamualaikum and hi everyone.
Today I would like to share about perioral dermatitis. I bet you will be wondering what perioral dermatitis is. Is it a type of dermatitis/eczema? The answer is YES.
Skin Conditions and Perioral Dermatitis
Perioral dermatitis is a facial rash that causes bumps to develop around the mouth. In some cases, a similar rash may appear around the eyes, nose, forehead, or sometimes the genitals.
The condition is most commonly seen in young women (90% of cases), but it can affect men as well.

What Causes Perioral Dermatitis?
The exact cause of perioral dermatitis is not known. It may be from an external source that is irritating your skin such as toothpaste or a skincare product, or something that you are allergic to. However, it may appear after topical steroid creams are applied to the face to treat other conditions.
What Are the Symptoms of Perioral Dermatitis?
Perioral dermatitis results in bumps around the skin of the mouth, and a rash may appear around the eyes, nose, forehead, or sometimes the genitals.
The condition usually is characterized by an uncomfortable burning sensation around the mouth.
How Is Perioral Dermatitis Diagnosed?
A doctor is likely to diagnose perioral dermatitis based on the skin's appearance. No tests are usually done. In some cases, a culture for bacteria may be needed to eliminate the possibility of infection.
How Is Perioral Dermatitis Treated?
To treat perioral dermatitis, discontinue the use of all topical steroid medications and facial creams. You may need to change your skincare routine, by using fragrance-free cleansers and moisturizers, not scrubbing, and gently patting dry your skin.
Oral or topical antibiotics or a combination of them, used as an anti-inflammatory drug, for 6 to 12 weeks may also be prescribed.
I will share my personal experience in the next post. Stay tuned 😉.
